Igreja do Carmo

Igreja do Carmo

Monument & Heritage

One of the main tourist attractions of Lisbon, the Convent and Carmo Church was once the main Gothic church in the city. Built between 1389 and 1423, it was ruined by the earthquake of 1755. Having not been rebuilt, it is currently one of the main visible testimonies of the catastrophe.

Although it is no longer a functional church, one can still see clearly the vestiges of religious grandeur within the shell of this building that has long inspired worshipers. In this idyllic ruined setting, it is possible to walk through the ruined main ship and look up at the sky through the ruined ogive arches.

Currently, the church's ruins complex houses the Carmo Archaeological Museum, offering a fascinating insight into the city's past.
