Mosteiro dos Jerónimos

Mosteiro dos Jerónimos

Monument & Heritage

The ornate and richly carved columns of the Jeronimos Monastery reach up to scrape the blue sky, the sunlight shining on each facet of the many figures within its gables and pinnacles.

This awe-inspiring monastery is one of the most prominent examples of the Manueline Style of the Late Gothic period in Portugal. It was constructed in 1502 and remarkably, it survived the 1755 earthquake mostly intact. It was classified, along with the nearby Tower of Belem, as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. If you look closely at the beautifully carved limestone architectural details you can see maritime themes and even objects that were discovered during naval expeditions.

The interior is equally stunning. Gaze up at the lofty ribbed vault ceiling and admire the octagonal columns, which are typical of the Renaissance style. This building is truly a masterwork, creating an incredible sense of space and inspiring wonder and reverence in all visitors.
