Cristo Rei

Viewpoint

Standing with outstretched arms over the city of Lisbon, the Christ the King monument was inspired by the iconic Christ the Redeemer sculpture in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The enormous cement sculpture was erected in 1959 to express gratitude for the fact that Portugal was spared the effects of World War II.

The statue can be reached by the commuter ferry from Cais do Sodre Station, across the river to Cacilhas. The ferry crossing itself is quite scenic, so have your camera ready.

With a height of 28m, the Cristo Rei is a work of the Portuguese sculptor Francisco Franco de Sousa and rests with open arms facing the Lisbon city on a portico with 75m of height and 113m above the level of the Tagus River.

Visiting and climbing to this viewpoint you can enjoy the best view of Lisbon and 25 de Abril Bridge.
