Arco da Rua Augusta
Arco da Rua Augusta
Monument & Heritage
The triumphal arch, towering over the Praca do Comercio, is one of the most recognised historic monuments in the city. Designed by the architect Santos de Carvalho, it celebrates the rebirth of the city after it was almost completely destroyed by the 1755 earthquake. Upon the roof stands the figure of Glory, who is crowning the figures of Bravery and Genius with wreaths.
As well as acting as a dramatic and iconic entranceway to Rua Augusta, this arch also allows visitors to climb to the top and admire stunning 360 degree views of the square, the river and the Baixa district.
If you visit during a warm summer night, the arch will be used as a screen to broadcast a light show and video on the history of Lisbon.
