Museu das Artes Decorativas

Museum

An absolute feast for the eyes, this Lisbon museum offers a stunning collection of decorative arts from throughout the ages. It is owed by the Ricardo Espirito Santo Silva Foundation, which is dedicated to preserving the rich cultural heritage that was left to Lisbon by the weather banker and art collector Ricardo Espirito Santo. It’s a must-visit for any art or history lover visiting Lisbon.

This impressive cultural institution contains more than 1,300 exhibits, including items that date back as far as the 15th century. Wander through the displays and marvel at the intricate European silverware, deftly woven Flemish tapestries and fine Chinese porcelain. The items are set within a carefully re-created depiction of the exquisite interior decor of the Portuguese aristocracy.

The museum also contains several fascinating workshops where you can watch the artisans practicing their highly skilled crafts - including gilding, woodcarving and book binding.
