Rua Augusta

Place of Interest

Walking down the Rua Augusta, Lisbon´s main pedestrian street, is a delight for the senses. The sun shines and reflects on the colourful mosaic pavements, lively chatter floats up from outdoor cafes and street artists sing and play their instruments. Closed to traffic, this is one of the busiest areas of Lisbon and you’ll find a lot of intriguing shops here, offering a unique selection of everything from handbags to shoes to jewellery and much more.

The triumphal arch that is the focal point of Rua Augusta is truly iconic and you can climb to the top of this beautiful structure for an impressive view of the city and the river. The arch was built to symbolise the rebirth of Lisbon after the earthquake, tsunami and fire that destroyed the city in 1755. As you admire the 360 degree view you can really see how vibrantly Lisbon has recovered since then.
