Museum
This intriguing and interactive museum will take visitors on a 60 minute journey, revealing the history of Lisbon from its original founding in ancient Roman day to the modern era. The well-made multimedia exhibits and audio guide will teach you all about the 1755 earthquake, the large-scale reconstruction that followed, the reign of King Manuel 1, the age of New World discoveries and much more.
You’ll also learn about Marques de Pombal, who lead the urban city planning when redesigning the city after it was destroyed. There is even a powerful and evocative film that recreates the horror of the earthquake. You’ll see the churches crumble and shake, the boats in the harbour burst into flames and the people run from the tsunami. It is a moving account of what happened and it will make you feel like you were there.
