Museu da Cidade

Museum

The ideal place to get a crash course in the history of Lisbon, this city museum tells the story of the city through paintings, models, period furniture, artefacts, tiles and much more. The collections go all the way back to prehistoric times and all the way up to the 20th century. You can learn about the days of the Romans, the Visigoths and the Moors.

The museum is located within a gorgeous manor house from the 18th Century, which is decorated with hand painted tiles. One of the most intriguing elements of the exhibition is the drawings of the damage done by the 1755 earthquake - powerful depictions of an unforgettable event.

The Palacio Pimenta is also part of the museum, an elegant summer palace from the 1700s which houses several intriguing archaeological finds and a peaceful garden where peacocks wander.

The museum also includes the Casa Dos Bicos, Santo Antonio, Torreão Poente and the Teatro Romano, each distinct exhibition space offering a different perspective on Lisbon.
