Panteão Nacional
Monument & Heritage
Crowned with an elegant dome providing a 360 degree view of the city and the river, the building evokes Greek architectural inspirations. The interior is decorated in slabs of multi-coloured marble in a dazzling symmetrical design. The style of the building follows conventions of traditional Islamic architecture and decoration, which is unique within the churches of Lisbon.
The design of the tiles is best viewed from the dome, looking back down into the building at the geometric patterns. There is no elevator - to reach the top of the dome you will need to take the six steep flights of stairs to the top level.
This National Pantheon also contains the tombs of several Portuguese presidents, as well as the famous Fado singer Amália Rodrigues and the writer Almeida Garrett.
