Rossio
Place of Interest
Also known as D. Pedro IV Square, Rossio is a vibrant square in the heart of the city, where the people of Lisbon gather to enjoy a drink, relax and watch people go by. Take a break for a coffee in the famous Art Deco style Cafe Nicola and admire the elegant baroque twin fountains.
In the center of the square stands a 28-meter-high column, on top of which stands the statue of D. Pedro IV instead of honor, placed here in 1870. At its base, four female figures represent the qualities attributed to D. Pedro, namely Justice, Wisdom, Strength and Moderation.
On the north side of this square you can also admire the imposing façade of the neoclassical Dona Maria II National Theatre - built in the 1840s.
As you stroll, watch the wave pattern of the Portuguese sidewalk beneath your feet - a design that has been used on other floors and has spread to Portuguese colonies around the world.
