Praça da Figueira

Place of Interest

Praça da Figueira is located in Lisbon downtown, near the Rossio and underwent a change in 1755. Before the 1755 earthquake was the site of the All Saints Royal Hospital, which did not withstand the catastrophe. In 1885, with the new planning plan of the Marquês de Pombal, a covered market was built there, which was demolished in 1950.

Currently, Praça da Figueira is a pleasant open space, surrounded by elegant four-story Pombal buildings, currently occupied by hotels, cafes and shops. In the center stands the equestrian statue of King D. João I, erected in 1971 and that is usually surrounded by flocks of pigeons.

On the last weekend of each month, the square comes to live with a traditional market where you can taste the delicious delights of regional producers and admire the craftsmanship of the local artisans. Try the pork sandwiches, the hot wine in the winter and the wonderful Alentejo and Serra da Estrela cheese.
