Miradouro do Largo das Necessidades

Viewpoint

This leafy and quiet garden is a pleasant place to relax at any time of the day. Urban yet secluded, it faces the Church of the same name. In the past it was known as the Olavo Bilac Garden, in honour of this Brazilian poet.

You can cast your eyes over the rooftops of the city, listen to the fountains and stroll through one of the oldest cactus gardens in Europe. The garden contains a children’s playground as well as many wooden benches for resting, amidst the curvilinear plant beds and illuminating lamps.

On one side you can savour views of the river, the 25 de Abril Bridge and the Alcantara area. Just behind the garden you will find the Palacio de Necessidades, which was once a residence of Portuguese kings.
